چکیده

A 39-year-old male presented with slurred speech, left hand weakness, gait unsteadiness and headaches over a period of 4 weeks. A brain MRI revealed a right motor strip lesion with Wallerian degeneration along the pyramidal tract plus brain stem and cerebellar FLAIR changes without enhancement ( fig. 1 ). Laboratory findings included a CD4 count of 56, HIV viral load of 2,597 and a positive CSF PCR for JC virus. The patient rapidly decompensated and expired shortly after admission. Wallerian degeneration results from axonal disintegration following a stereotypical time course and is due to various pathologies including stroke [1, 2] and progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

Polyomavirus-Associated Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy (PML) in HAART era

Polyomaviruses may cause human disease, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. JCV, one of the members of polyomaviridae family, is the causative agent of the neurological disease progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), which occurs mostly in immunocompromised patients. Progressive Multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a progressive demyelinating disorder of the central nervous sy...

A "cortico-basal degeneration"-like syndrome as first sign of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

We report an unusual case of probable progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), who initially presented with a right-sided movement disorder, including upper limb dystonia, tremor, and dyspraxia, reminiscent of corticobasal degeneration. In the further course, the patient developed disorientation, confusion, and bradyphrenia. The appearance of white matter MRI lesions as well as a posit...

CLINICAL REPORT ADULT BRAIN BrainMagnetic Susceptibility Changes in Patients with Natalizumab-Associated ProgressiveMultifocal Leukoencephalopathy

SUMMARY: We investigated the brain magnetic susceptibility changes induced by natalizumab-associated progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. We retrospectively included 12 patients with natalizumab–progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, 5 with progressivemultifocal leukoencephalopathy fromother causes, and 55 patients withMSwithout progressivemultifocal leukoencephalopathy for comparis...

Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy in AIDS: Proton MR Spectroscopy Patterns of Asynchronous Lesions Confirmed by Serial Diffusion-Weighted Imaging and Apparent Diffusion Coefficient Mapping

Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) is a rare disease that occurs mainly in immunocompromised patients. Despite the progressive nature of the disease, the changes on MRI during the disease course - which may help in monitoring the disease process - have seldom been reported. Here we describe a patient with polymerase-chain-reaction-proven PML examined using serial diffusion-weighte...
